While alternate uses of the word are also available in the English language, typically, when someone speaks of the moon images of a white spherical shape in the night sky is called to mind. An eclipse of the moon, also called a lunar eclipse, occurs when the earth moves directly in between the sun and the moon where the earth casts a shadow on the moon.
